Understading Plagiarism and Referencing

Understanding plagiarism and referencing

I have found one of the most important book which help me to better unstand about the citing referencing and plagiarism. The name of this book is ‘ The complete guide to referencing and avoiding plagiarism’ written by, Neville, Colin.

In college courses, we are continually engaged with other people’s ideas: we read them in texts, hear them in lecture, discuss them in class, and incorporate them into our own writing. As a result, it is very important that we give credit where it is due. Plagiarism is using others’ ideas and words without clearly acknowledging the source of that information.

Plagiarism means:

Copying directly from a text, word-for-word
Using an attractive phrase or sentence you have found somewhere
Using text downloaded from the Internet
Paraphrasing the words of a text very closely
Borrowing statistics from another source or person
Copying from the essays or the notes of another
Downloading or copying pictures, photographs, or diagrams without acknowledging your sources
When we are submitting academic work for assessment, it is important to provide precise bibliographic information on all of the sources consulted during its preparation. The use of proper citation and referencing within our work will help us to avoid plagiarism, and will enable readers to follow our line of research.

A range of referencing styles is used within the University, so it is necessary for us to check with ours university as to which is their preferred style. They may even provide specific guidelines on its interpretation. Once we have established which style we should be using, it is important to be consistent in its application.
